Deadlift Max: Estimate Your Strongest Pull
The deadlift is the lift where estimates matter most, because true max pulls are the most taxing test in the gym.
Estimate deadlift 1RM from a hard set of 3 to 6 reps: 315 x 5 gives about 368 by Epley. Program heavy pulls at 80 to 90 percent once a week, since deadlifts fatigue the nervous system more than any other lift. Grip and lockout are the usual limiters.
Estimating your deadlift max
Deadlift estimates behave well because the lift has no stretch reflex to complicate the math: what you pull for 5 hard reps predicts the max cleanly. Example: 315 x 5 reps = 315 x (1 + 5/30) = 367.5 estimated. Keep the input set at 6 reps or fewer; heavy deadlift sets past 8 reps become conditioning and the estimate drifts.
Programming heavy pulls
One heavy deadlift session per week is plenty: work up to one top set at 85 to 90 percent for 3 to 5 reps, or several sets at 80 percent. Deadlifts interfere with squat recovery, so schedule them at least 72 hours from heavy squats. Add 5 to 10 pounds per week while speed off the floor stays fast.
Grip: the silent limiter
Many lifters' backs can pull more than their hands can hold. Train grip directly with heavy holds and farmer carries, and save mixed grip or straps for top sets only. If the bar rolls out of your hands above 90 percent, grip is your program, not your back.
Lockout and off-the-floor weakness
Slow off the floor: deficit deadlifts and quad work. Sticking at the knees: block pulls and glute work. Rounding that worsens with load: drop 10 percent and rebuild the brace; no max is worth a herniated disc.

Deadlift max questions
What is a good deadlift max?
Pulling double your bodyweight is the classic strong standard. Two and a half times bodyweight is elite for recreational lifters.
How often should I deadlift heavy?
Once a week for heavy work. The deadlift loads the entire posterior chain and nervous system, so it needs more recovery than squats or presses.
Should I use straps for max attempts?
Straps are fine for heavy training sets so grip does not limit back development, but keep some strapless work so your grip keeps pace.
Why do estimates beat testing for deadlift?
A genuine max deadlift attempt can cost a week of recovery and carries real injury risk. An estimate from a hard set of 5 gives you the programming number without the price.
